IRS Identity Verification Letters
As part of their fight against tax identity theft the IRS will send an individual a letter (Letter 4883C) when they believe a return that was filed in the individual’s name may not have been filed by that individual. The Letter 4883C asks the individual to call a toll-free IRS Identity Verification telephone number to verify their identity.
In order to expedite the identity verification process the individual should have the following available when they call:
- Your 4883C Letter
- Copy of 2015 tax return
- Your 2016 federal return (or a copy), as well as any supporting documents such as W-2’s, 1099’s, Schedule C, etc.
Once an individual has verified themselves and confirmed that they submitted the return, it will take about 9 weeks to complete the process.
If the individual did file the return it is important that they call the IRS and verify themselves. The IRS will then complete the processing of their 2016 federal return and release any refund associated with it. If they do not call, the IRS will consider the return invalid and that they have not filed a 2016 return.
