The franchise world is growing more and more every year, and the number of potential franchisees are also on an uptick. While it is an exciting prospect to own your own franchise, there are a few things you should think about before taking the plunge.
Question 1: Do I have what it takes?
One of the most important questions to ask yourself is: Do you have what it takes to begin the journey? Most people give up on their dreams as soon as they encounter a few bumps. Becoming a franchisee will definitely be a bumpy road, so you have to have the inner strength to roll with the punches and do what you need to do to kick-start your dream. Nothing ever comes easy, so make sure you’re ready for the trials ahead.
Question 2: Have I looked at all my options?
There are literally hundreds of options out there for a person looking to own a franchise. The largest amount of opportunities by far reside in the food sector, followed closely by services and specialty interests. While owning a pizza place may seem like a good idea initially, make sure that the industry you ultimately choose is the right one for you and your interests.
Take the time to shop around as many options as you can, you never know what may end up interesting you in the long run. With such a varied pool of choices in franchising, there’s bound to be something that is the perfect fit for you. You just have to find it!
Question 3: Do I have the capital?
Where are you money wise? Starting a business takes a large infusion of capital, and that’s up to you to rustle up. Franchise pricing is also something to look at before making any decisions. Based on start up costs and industry, what would be in your best interest to pursue?
Many franchises require a hundred thousand dollars or more to start, but there are also those that cost as little as a quarter of that amount to get going. Make sure you know that you’ll have the money to get started the right way, and never try to play from behind.
Question 4: How much of my time will it take?
Another big question: just how much time will it take to run your franchise? Most people acquire franchises in order to make it into a turn-key operation. That is, to make their business as work free as possible by putting the right people in place to do the work for them. In looking to buy, ask yourself what level of involvement you are comfortable with, as some business will demand much more of your time than others.
No one wants to go from tossing toppings, to business owner, to pounding dough, right?
Question 5: Will the industry be there in 20 years?
BIG QUESTION! What does the industry of your choice currently look like? We wouldn’t recommend buying a travel agency franchise, for example, as that industry is on its last gallon of jet fuel. Overall health of the business as well as the industry is paramount when searching for potential franchise opportunities. So take some time to research and ask yourself some important questions: Will my business by thriving in ten years, or will I be boarding the place up? How is the industry health wise? Is it thriving? Is it on its last legs?
